RYU - MOVES COMBOS & STRATEGY
CHARACTER INTRO
Legendary Street Fighter player Daigo is ranked #1 in arcades in Japan and Ryu is his top pick at the moment so that should tell you something: Daigo is really good at Street Fighter 4 and Ryu has the tools to beat anyone in the game.
It is hard to argue since it has been said that Ryu forces his opponents to play Street Fighter II style, zoning with Hadoukens and punishing jumps with Shoryukens. When embraced, this basic style of play has an answer for almost any situation.
Ryu in Street Fighter 4 has some great normals such as crouching light punch which links into his crouching hard punch which leads to some seriously demoralizing combos.
He retains his overhead towards and medium punch and his advancing towards and hard punch from previous games. His crouching medium kick, as always, is a great move to cancel into fireball to keep the pressure on your opponent.
His EX Fireball, unlike Kens, knocks down on hit and in the corner can be followed up with an Ultra. Its probably his best move to use with EX meter.
Ryu's Ultra is one of the best in the game in that it can be connected off of so many moves and in so many situations. It also does a decent amount of chip damage.
If you want to play a Shoto without all the fluff and take your opponents back to the days of Street Fighter II, Ryu is probably your best pick.
COMMAND NORMALS
FORWARD + STRONG PUNCH
- Overhead punch.
FORWARD + FIERCE PUNCH
- Two hit punch that moves Ryu forward. You can combo after it with a dragon punch and also many of his normal moves such as crouching strong and crouching fierce.
SPECIAL MOVES
HADOUKEN (FIREBALL)
QUARTER CIRCLE FORWARD + PUNCH
- Allows Ryu to throw a fireball. Good move for zoning.
- EX version is two hits, knocks down.
SHORYUKEN (DRAGON PUNCH)

FORWARD, DOWN, DOWN FORWARD + PUNCH
- Good for anti air and combos. Focus Attack Dash Cancel into Ultra is a combo.
TATSUMAKI SENPUUKYAKU (HURRICANE KICK)
QUARTER CIRCLE BACK + KICK
- Can be done in air.
- EX version spins in place.
SUPER
SHINKUU HADOUKEN
QUARTER CIRCLE FORWARD X2 + PUNCH
ULTRA
METSU HADOUKEN
QUARTER CIRCLE FORWARD X2 + THREE PUNCHES
- Ryu's Ultra, like many other character's Ultras, has a big amount of start-up frames. Opponents will be able to jump over the Ultra projectile on reaction. The real key to using this ultra is in a juggle combo. There are several situations where this is possible, such as:
- Close Shoryuken. Focus Attack Dash Cancel forward immediately, Ultra.
- Connect with a late-hitting Shoryuken (at around the apex of the Shoryuken), land, Ultra
- EX HADOUKEN in the CORNER, immediately ULTRA
- AIR to AIR Strong Punch (strong juggles), land, Ultra
- If your anti-air Shoryuken trades, recover from the hit while they're still in the air, Ultra

This is a combo I found out that you can use with Ryu that takes a great deal of damage on thier life bar and can be used in and out of corner. Didn't see it in the combo list so I decided to add. If the video isn't showing then it's something like this (excuse me if my sf4 lingo isn't up to speed):
Jumping HK, c HP, Hadouken, Supercancel, c HP Shoryu Supercancel, Ultra
If done right it takes more than half life. I have the video on youtube, it's titled "Ultimate Ryu Combo"
Oh man! That is one fierce combo. I hate being hit by ANY Ultimate combo like that.
Can you explain canceling, new to SF4 & cant execute any combos.
watching the vid doesn't help
many many many thanks.
Nasty combo, but 2 focus cancels will reduce the damage on the ultra to almost nothing. You'd be better off canceling super into ultra, or just using the ex moves.
yeah. im new too. whats cancel?
Cancel is a pain in the arse to time correctly in some moves.
I'm finding canceling out of a Shuryken pretty much impossible.
For those who don't know canceling is when you go to perform a focus attack by pressing both the medium punch and kick buttons then double tap the left stick to the right or left, thus cancelling the focus attack, letting you pull of some more moves instead of waiting for the focus attack's animation to end, and it's very fiddly.
