IPW TOPIC OF THE WEEK: What would it take to get you to play Soul Calibur again?

This topic is inspired by an article put together by Aris over at AvoidingthePuddle.com, where he mentions that he is not at all excited about a new Soul Calibur coming out due to the past few games being well, pretty much crap all around from a competitive standpoint.

This got me thinking. While I am always looking forward to any new fighting game, I really hadn't played the Soul Calibur series much at all since Soul Calibur on Dreamcast and a few casual sessions of Soul Calibur 2 on Gamecube. Why is that? Virtua Fighter 5, Tekken 5 and 6 -- hell, even NeoGeo Battle Coliseum. I played all of those games at a decent level but during that span of time never gave the newer Soul Calibur games a chance. There was never really much of a competitive scene wherever I played, and throwing in guest characters like Darth Vader and Yoda made the game look like a joke.

Now of course there are players who still play these games competitively, but I know I am not alone in not giving the Soul Calibur series a second thought after playing it on the Dreamcast.

So, what would it take for you to get back into the series?

Tokido's Laboratory Blog Update - Daigo, Mago, Kindevu & Tokido first to reach Master Rank in SSF4: AE

Tokido updated his blog once again noting that the first four players to reach Master Rank in SSF4: AE are Daigo, Mago, Kindevu and himself! As far as I know, Daigo and Kindevu hit Master Rank using Yun, Mago hit it using Fei Long and of course Tokido using Akuma. He mentions it takes 35000BP to reach Master Rank, and at this point it apparently becomes much more difficult to acquire more BP.

Arcade Infinity to Close its Doors January 15th

Glenn over at GYT posted a link via Facebook to a thread on SRK that is reporting Arcade Infinity will be closing its doors come January 15th. This is very sad news all around, especially since many arcades are booming after the release of SSF4: AE.

Though I live in NorCal, I have a lot of great memories about Arcade Infinity from the times I've travelled to SoCal, and I'm really disappointed I wont be able to visit again before it shuts down. More than that, they released great HD quality videos from time to time to their YouTube Channel that I really enjoyed.

Post up in the comments about your memories of AI, and of course be sure to swing by before Jan 15th if you live in SoCal.

SSF4: AE Character Usage and BP Averages in Japan

Click for full sizeToypop on NeoGAF posted up an interesting chart from the 2ch BBS showing the current character usage and BP average for SSF4:AE in Japan. Yun is at the top with the highest BP average, though Daigo and Kindevu most likely have a little something to do with that as they were the two highest ranking players last week using Yun.

As far as character usage goes, Ryu is at the top -- no real surprise there -- with a lot of the other usual suspects right below him. Click the image to the left to check out the numbers for yourself.

SSF4:AE Footage Showing New Ultra Set Up for Yang, Dash into Ultra 2 for DeeJay

Updated on Sunday, December 26, 2010 at 3:33PM by Registered Commenterhaunts

Kim1234 uploaded a killer SSF4:AE video to his YouTube Channel today showing some really cool stuff for both Yang and DeeJay. The DeeJay player is really solid all around, and you'll see that pulling off the mid-screen EX MGU into U2 is either a lot easier now (it is), or the DeeJay player just spent hours in training mode grinding it out at home.

What caught my eye in this video though is what appears to be a new set up for Yang's Ultra 1: Command Throw, Close Standing Medium Kick, SJC into Wiff Dive Kick, Ultra 1.

Hidden YouTube, Crouching SSF4: AE

I came across Illevate's YouTube Channel thanks to jman2050 on NeoGAF, that contains a ton of SSF4:AE matches under 50 views each. This can only mean one thing: you haven't seen them yet. More than that, there is a real good mix of characters such as Makoto, Gen, Claw and more. Worth checking out if you're looking for some new AE vids to peep.

I've embedded a video below, and if you're looking for more YT Channels with AE footage, check out our Master List by clicking here.

SSF4: AE and the Return of the Arcade Scene

It's all too easy to forget about the arcade scene with the ease and convenience of playing online and well, the fact that SSF4 was only on console to begin with, leaving Vanilla SF4 and the arcade scene in the dust. With the release of SSF4: AE, everything has changed, and once again, players both old and new get to experience that "arcade feeling".

Playing at MGL a few days ago reminded me of one crucial factor about playing at arcades: you simply level up much faster in this sort of atmosphere.

But why? Isn't online or even local casual play just as effective?

Day 1 SSF4: AE at Milpitas Golfland and BLG Filipino Champ's 28 Win Streak

Here in NorCal Milpitas Golfland received Super Street Fighter 4: Arcade Edition on Thursday so RogerDodger and myself rolled down there with a camera to check it out and record some footage. We arrived around 8PMish and there were easily 30 people waiting to play, which resulted in about a 2 hour wait to play one game. This was partly due to the fact that there is an issue with Sunnyvale Golfland's SSF4:AE machine -- you can currently only play the CPU, though I've heard this will be resolved in a week or two -- resulting in everyone high tailing it to MGL to play the game. One cab for the entire Norcal SF scene just isn't enough.

Some big names were in the house such as John Choi, Ricky Ortiz, Crackfiend, Lamerboi, LPN, Crizzle, Buktooth and even Seth Killian, just to name a few. Another top player you may have heard of, BLG Filipino Champ, was also in attendance, and once he got on the machine, well, he didn't get off until they shut the joint down. He went on a 28 win streak with Dhalsim, and outside of a handful of matches, none of them were even close.

Zak Bennett Talks Balrog Changes in SSF4: AE

Zak Bannett who is one of the UK's most well known players put together a great write up for Neo Empire about the changes Balrog received in SSF4:AE. While many players have thought the changes to be fairly minor, Zak has completely different take on it, saying the increase on recovery for 'Rogs headbutt is a "massive issue" that will have a big impact on his overall game.

That said, don't panic just yet. He mentions that much like many other characters in the game, Capcom has put a more offensive spin on Balrog's play style, mainly due to his new Close Standing Medium punch. This apparently opens up a whole new can of whoop ass for Boxer, and he put together a solid list of combos surrounding the adjusted move to check out as well.

Below is a short chunk from the write up, but don't miss the rest over at Neo Empire.
