« Skullgirls May Include Replay Runback Feature »

How many times has this happened to you in a fighting game? You get put in a bad situation, then you make a terrible decision and lose a ton of life. Afterwards, you're left wondering what would have happened if you had only done something differently at that pivotal moment. If Skullgirls programmer Mike Z. gets his way, you won't have to wonder anymore.

Mike Z. is hoping to put a mindblowing new feature into Skullgirls' replay mode. While replaying a recorded match, you would be able to stop the replay at any point and resume control of your character. This would allow the player to experiment with different courses of action. Run it back and mash out a DP instead of a throw tech. Cancel that whiff into something safe. The possibilties are endless.

The interview with Mike Z. begins at 1:00 in the Level|Up stream embedded below, and the replay discussion begins at 1:26.

That would be a great learning tool. Hope it gets added in.

Wont be that helpfull actually, cuz you'll be playing the cpu afterwards. This is more of a egoboost than a learning tool. I expect it to be helpfull for scrubs to give their confidence back ("You see! I knew I had to mash DP again!") or for advance players to test out multiple reactions for the same situations wich is something you can already do in training mode by recording the dummy movements. Although its fun I dont see it adding to much.

I'm really failing to see how this would be any good at all....

You'd be replaying a CPU, not the human opponent that can adjust their strategies on the fly...

Wow are you guys that dense? Its a single situation replay, you don't pick up from there with the CPU, you replay that single moment, that little matchup, like a 3-5 second gap. Its a priceless learning tool that will allow you to figure out how you could've saved your ass (as was said, find out how to cancel that whiff), how you could've increased your damage (testing linking into a different combo), or helping you figure out how to beat that move.

I know I really wish this existed on SSFIV, there are times with Yang vs Dudley I wish I could've replayed our matchup to get it down pat what move beats what outright (since those two seem to have hitboxes that dodge eachother frequently or outright beat eachother)

This is... an incredibly powerful tool. Mike Z is the man and SG is shaping up to be an FG by FG players, for FG players.

Hype!

shadow, does the record feature in SSF4 training mode not cover all of these needs? Record the 2nd player dudley and perform the move you are wondering about and then have it loop play and practice what you need to do to punish, etc. it's exactly what you sound like you're looking for.

Recording the exact combination they did or their full combos/mixups for characters you don't know how to play is quite obnoxious, its 1000 times easier just to hop into the replay and jump right into the fight again.

This is a MAJOR convenience.

It doesnt sound all that useful because im sure most of us know what caused us to lose the match and given the chance we learn to adapt with the next match if not within the next few rematches. Im not against the feature however since it shouldnt be game breaking as long as it can only be used against AI.

I cant wait for a release date.
