« Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition Was Made Purposely Unbalanced Says Ono »

Capcom's Yoshinori Ono made some interesting comments to Japanese gaming magazing Weekly Famitsu in the latest issue.  He stated that while the home version of Super Street Fighter 4 is designed to be balanced, that the arcade version is not. Here's what Andriasang translated from the magazine:

The home version of Super SFIV was made with extremely good balance, explained Ono. The balance was done in such a way that there's no one overly powerful character.

Arcade Edition, on the other hand, has some characters who were purposely made strong. The reason this was done is because Ono feels that having such a character helps to build community and competitive spirit.

Ono did not comment on whether Arcade Edition will find its way into the home release.

I'm interested in hearing from those who are heavily involved with the scene & tournaments about this statement from Ono.

Which is better: balanced characters or a small handful of buffed characters? Pros / cons?

"Ono did not comment on whether Arcade Edition will find its way into the home release."

I'm not sure I understand... wasn't the whole point of those comments to explain why Arcade Edition was NOT coming to home consoles? That was the whole contention of the cited article.

Also hadn't Ono stated this information about wanting super powered characters in AE a few times before?

We seen the achievements for the arcade characters. The only thing is are they going to be DLC or a disc release.

I purposely didn't print that aspect of the story because it's crap. Ono has done this kind of thing before, and it may even be a mistranslation.

AE will come to the home consoles in some form, whether it's a title update or just DLC characters.

Here's some of ONO's tweets, collected by Xater at NEOGAF:

His responses on Twitter:

Plz wait it after release 3DS in US/Euro !! ;D RT @xGlakex:3DS is out now in Japan and SSFIV 3D! Can we have SSF4 AE for Console news now?

I'll try not to disappoint every time! Is it right? ;) RT @Jason24cf:I hope this story isn't true it's reported that SSFIV won't be DLC

I make someone less unhappy! Everything's going to be all right! RT @_khany: why is SSFIV AE not being released outside arcades :( Sad news

Over my dead body!! It all right! ;D RT @VicRattlehead0: is it true no AE edition on console?

I would not panic yet.

You know, I appreciate what Ono's done--bringing back Street Fighter and all, but at times he appears completely clueless about fighting games. No one minds if a boss character is overpowered but to make some characters deliberately weak ain't cool. Give all the characters the tools they need to win and call it a day and let the players sort out the rest.

I definitely get what he means about having unbalanced characters, mainly because it's kind of cool having one character that seems super good and that because it generates superb hype when someone does well without it. It's the underdog effect that everyone loves.

As long as it makes the arcade scene more competitive, but do NOT mess with console versions. Like Ninja Bob said, you give each characters they need to win and let the community develop characters and let THEM determine who is top tier, etc.

I picture it like sports games. Some teams should be better than others.

It's important to make it possible to win with the majority of the cast, but at the same time some characters should be stronger than others. It's part of the game. It makes things exciting.

i hate people who bitch about balancing and tiers

February 24, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterShitStainedShorts

As long as the Console version has some semibiance of Balance I really don't care. Ae Is fun and all, but I can only take so much of Yun Yang and Fei in a day. But all this "need to build hype" In other words Trolling By Ono and Capcom just makes me not want to spend money on them.

if i wanted a balanced game i would've bought tekken i never play street fighter expecting balanced characters. that's just the truth.

February 24, 2011 | Unregistered Commenteredrigo

No game is perfectly balanced but i really do hope ono is trolling because purposely going out of your way to make a fighting game unbalanced is stupid. Not only will you be seeing the same characters over and over at tournaments youll also be facing those characters all the time online. Whenever a high tier character or characters are known lots of people jump all over them especially when they known high profile players like daigo/justin wong are maining them.

If this truly is the case ill definitely be skipping out on SSFIV AE and just stick to other fighters that atleast try to remain balanced. Really hope ono's trolling though because hes just trying to put a spin making fei long, yun and yang over powered like he did it on purpose. The best fighting games give all characters a good chance of winning regardless of some characters being better than others.

I mean at the end of the day if your a more skilled player and you continue to lose to people who are slightly less skilled your going to eventually end up using over powered characters. It might work for the VS series but having a SF game where character balance really doesnt matter is once again plain stupid. In end if this is truly onos intent then hes only killing SFIV.

Can we start a petition to NOT have Arcade edition released on home consoles. Personally i dont want yun and yang if they are going to be the best characters in the game, and I dont really want any of the changes to current changes I personally think the game is perfect as it is. This is my personal opinion of course.

lol excuses are a bad habit to get into.

I love it AE seems much more fast paced and high powered Ill never get to play in arcades cuz there are basically 0 in springfield but I just wanna play with Yun and Yang again I miss em. I just hope they make their way to console whether they get toned down DLC or whatever matter of fact I really just want Street Fighter 3 online.
