« Captivate 2010: Marvel vs Capcom 3: Game Details and Artwork »

More details on Marvel vs Capcom 3's gameplay and features has surfaced.

Marvel vs Capcom 3 will feature 3D characters on a 2D plane, like the Street Fighter 4 titles and Tatsunoko vs Capcom.  It will not, however, use the graphics engine from those games.  The game will use an "advanced version" of MT Framework, the same engine used in Lost Planet 2 and Resident Evil 5.  Both titles are known for their stunning graphical detail.

"Each version of MT Framework gets better than the previous version," Marvel vs Capcom 3 producer Ryoto Niitsuma said. "A lot of key staff are involved with this game and they wanted to use the engine they are more comfortable with."

Chris Baker, manager of licensed games at Marvel Studios, called the title a "beautiful, beautiful game."

Capcom's Seth Killian says that the shaders that will be used on each character will make them visually distinct in motion.

"You could see him sitting in a comic book frame," Killian said, "and maybe one day you will."

Marvel vs Capcom 3 will also have a robust musical score.  At least 100 pieces of music, including remixes of favorites from previous Marvel vs Capcom games, will be present along with original scores.

The game will feature around 30 characters.  Niitsuma-san says that time constraints have led the team to settle on that number of characters, even though the game can support any number of characters.

New characters via DLC are certainly possible, although Capcom's Seth Killian states that there are no plans set in stone at this time.

Marvel vs Capcom 3 will also feature a strong storyline, unlike previous titles in the series.  For a game that features Marvel characters who are popular because of compelling stories, this is a great improvement to strive for.

"It's important that game's have strong stories for Marvel," says Chris Baker. "With fighting games it's not as essential as an action game or role playing game but we are very much insisting there be some cohesive kind of story for this game."

30 characters eh =0, that is going to cause some whining. That means someone is out that was loved in MvC2. I do not envy them in getting the character list together. No matter what a lot of people are going to get very salty.

I am so curious to see a screenshot of this. With the MT Framework engine, this game could look absolutely stunning. Wow. Capcom is just hitting top tier again and again in the last few years! And we dont even know what SuperSF4 producer Ono is doing next, so we could be in for more fighting game goodness in the future!

I know what you mean. I know they can do DLC characters, but I knew that if they did a Mvc3 they would likely dissapoint in that area. They don't have many years of previous games to mine for assets to put together 56 characters like MvC2 did. 30 is still a great number, and you never know, there may be more by the time it hits.

from the MvC twitter: "The character art you see around teh interwebs is NOT key art. Those are in-game character models! SUPRISE!"

Yeah that is the thing tho 30 is a great number. I hope people focus on that and not go " GO NOES WERE IS MY JUBILEE!!!' tho if anyone asks for Jubilee they should be smacked!

Heck even i hope for mid 30's that just ups the odds for more lesser known fan favs to be in the game.

I agree that 30 is still strong for an opening cast. What was MVC1 like less than half of that? Well CAPCOM needs a start on where to market DLC characters. Although they say it's not "set in stone" it's gonna happen. I also love the artwork for the article, that same TvC artwork. Anybody now the illustrators name, I know he's had stuff from CvS or even before that. If they had a stick for this game with that on it I would definitely get it. For an SE stick on the Wii it was tempting to buy just to collect.

I will pay any price for Dazzler DLC

I have to say a character roster of that size is a step in the right direction for this franchise. You look at "around 30 characters" and think, oh damn, Super has more chars than that. But you have to take into consideration the scale of this game, the gameplay, and the number of team combinations. With all that you have a potential balancing disaster on your hands.

That being said I am really excited for this game. Gonna be shitting myself over the next year as they leak out characters and gameplay trailers.

If you think fans are excited that Marvel vs Capcom 3 is finally gonna be made, wait until Marvel and DC decide to just do the damn thing and let Capcom make Marvel vs DC. Now, that would generate more hype than the community could handle.

@Ninja Bob As cool as a concept as that is and one that many fans would see, where would Capcom fit into all this aside from being the ones to make the game?? They can't just make the game and not have their characters be included in the mix. It's been done in comic book fashion already in DC vs Marvel, which is an alright read.

What's up with Ryu's do yo?

April 21, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterbritepixel

@Nagglepuss Well, the sales of the game would certainly be a financial boon to Capcom. Also it would just be so freaking cool!!(My nephew made me say that, honest.. lol)

But hasn't Capcom made VS games in the past without any of their characters being present? "X-Men Children of the Atom" and "Marvel Superheroes" instance. Both those titles were well recieved and a Marvel vs Dc title would be a dream come true for fans with characters from both companies squaring off against each other(Batman vs Captain America; Wolverine vs Lobo; She-Hulk vs Wonder Woman; Superman vs Thor).

April 21, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterNinja Bob

@Ninja Bob Yes true. I used to play X-Men:COTA back on Sega Saturn. But those games inevitably created the collaboration of X-Men vs Street Fighter and brings us to where we are today MvC. We haven't seen an X-Men/MSH only fighting game beyond the VS series. But yes, it truly is a dream game and Capcom would be the one's to do it right. But the reality is that the only fighting game we may see DC characters is MK vs DCU. *sigh*.

April 21, 2010 | Registered CommenterNagglepuss

@Nagglepuss Man, it's too bad that DC ever got sucked into doing anything with the Mortal Combat universe. No disrespect intended to Mortal Combat or the game's fans, but that series has fallen wayyy off the map and lost it's way years ago.

But if anyone at Capcom is reading this: You guys will make a boat load of money if you can persuade Marvel and DC to get together and let Capcom do the VS game of the century. I'm willing to buy two copies--that's 120 bucks right there. 150 bucks if y'all make a collector's edition.

Now, don't make me drive all the way out to california and set up a one man sit-in using Seth "Killigan's" parking spot..We part-time security guards are known for our steely determination, you know.

Just looking at the picture provided, I'm going to hazard a guess at 4 of the silhouettes. The one directly to the left of Morrigan's head I'm thinking Super-Skrull. The one two to the left of Ironman holding the sword on its back I'm thinking is Deadpool. The one on the right side of Chris Redfield's elbow with the little bulge coming from the head is Captain America, and finally the one directly below Ryu's fist looks like Elektra. The only thing I'm basing these on is the silhouettes themselves and my huge following of Marvel comics. These are just guesses, but I gotta say, Super-Skrull, Deadpool, Cap, and Elektra would be pretty sweet.
