« Marn Responds to Seasons Beatings Drama »

Martin "Marn" Phan just posted up a blog on the Evil Geniuses website talking about the drama surrounding his win over Daigo, what he said on the stream afterward and where he feels his game is at with Dudley. Another interesting point he brings up is how he is criticized for the way he acts and his attitude is said to limit the growth of the community. He responds that the people who are truly preventing growth in the scene are those who just troll players online and don't attend events.

Whether or not you agree with Marn's point of view is of course up to you, but it's a good read either way. Check out the full blog post on the Evil Geniuses website

even if i think marn is kind of a douche, he is a fantastic player and nobody can bring the hype like he can.

Sure man. You've always been a little bitch, and probably always will be.

We all know this post/apology is complete bullshit. The ONLY reason your posting is because you got in trouble with EG. EG doesn't want fat, gross immature kids playing under their name who can't control themselves (eatting & personality.)

'Adrenaline' doesn't make you go on the mic, talk shit about Daigo, and say you don't even care about the tournament anymore. That's you never being able to grow up.

TLDR; His post was forced by EG for making them look bad. Marn is still incredibly fat, incredibly immature, and incredibly stupid.

October 18, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterNope

Is there a video of him after beating Daigo? I never saw where the hate comes from.

October 18, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAriesWarlock

It's not only the people talking shit before and the fanboys of Daigo like he says in the blog. I like Marn and even more since he sticks to Dudley. But that was bad, have some class.

October 18, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterhans

I thought it was obvious Marn did it not out of spite, but out of sheer hype for beating Daigo in a tournament. I think he needs to follow Justin Wong and Ricky Ortiz and stop paying so much attention to the internet.

October 18, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterVince

I had a feeling the drama will unfold as soon as Marn started jumping up and down screaming at Starnab on Friday. Didnt quite see it until last night's match vs Daigo.

I will always see Daigo as a legend, he's the poster child for this fighting game scene.. how does that kill the scene?

Marn if youre talking about the Daigo ball-licking, you'd be surprised at how many times I had to mute the stream due to JC and Skisonic debating swallowing Justin Wongs load or yours. I loved how the commentators stayed *SILENT* upon non-US players beating Us players and went apeshit over a wakeup ex dp.

That match was tight. There will always be people freaking out, im surprised nobody has beat the shit out of eachother at these events, especially the MVC2 finals. When youre being compensated for your contribution of your character you should keep your cool, but I totally understand the shit talking.

October 18, 2010 | Unregistered Commenteradj

Who are you nope? Are you a tourney player? Have you ever experienced being pumped after beating one of the top players in the world? Not to be a ass but you are the one that sounds "incredibly immature, and incredibly stupid"

As far as what Marn said in his blog hes right about the trolls. I bet you anything 99% of the people yelling about him have never been to an event ever. They sit there and watch streams and never do jack for SF other then play on live and think they are so bad ass.

Lets be real too every one here would have been out of our minds if we beat Daigo. I honestly don't know how i react. I am a reserved kind of guy in a lot of respect's. I want to think i would just start jumping up and down and give Daigo a hug or something. Truth is i don't know.

The thing is also the stream monsters are going to pick on Marn no what the guy does. They all are basically high school in their mind sets. Oh a bigger guy is winning at SF time for fat jokes. None of us know Marn and in the end Marn only has to answer to himself and to EG So lets get off the guy and just leave it at that.

btw Marn if you are reading this, great match gave one of the most hype moments in the tourney and of the year. GG. Don't tone yourself down for the sake of butt hurt stream monsters. Be you man and fuck the haters. It would be sad i think if you toned it down because of them. If you have to tone if down because of EG then yeah i get it but don't do it for them.

October 18, 2010 | Registered CommenterSpiron

Marn will always be one of the flashiest SF player around so as long as he give us hype matches, I don't see any reason to hate him.

@Nope - you're exactly the people Marn is referring to in his blog.

October 18, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterPinoySiga

He'll also be one of the fattest yo

October 18, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterYoyo ma

Marn was excited but he was still tacky and lacking class.

The SF community scene is hurt more by the general frat boy thuggishness and commentators/players running down the very people they beg to come to the tournament scene as "FREE" because they happen to lose to the best players in the country.

October 18, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterPostleweit

Man, fuck tourneys that shit is HIGHLY overrated. Wow, watching a bunch of losers play a videogame, big whoop.

October 18, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterNezz

"Daigo didn't help the scene. Daigo killed the scene. Real talk."

I would want to know how many people will start playing Dudley or SSf4 because of Marns win at SB5 and how many people started playing fighting games in general because of a certain six year old parry video.

Also, if someone who's completely alien to this hobby and culture asks me"Who is a great SF-Player?" whom would I show to this person? Sure enough not someone with such an immature behaviour.

October 18, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterRobbes

"The SF community scene is hurt more by the general frat boy thuggishness and commentators/players running down the very people they beg to come to the tournament scene as "FREE" because they happen to lose to the best players in the country."

Good point.

October 18, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterHatchetJob

@Pinoysiga - you're exactly the type of braindead idiot to eat it all up.

I know I'm trolling, but I speak the truth.

Only reason he made this post was because he embarrassed his sponsorship with EG. GUARANTEED. He's done this all in the past, but now he has a sponsorship and he forgot to control himself.

The only thing he did not need to was go on the mic and talk shit and say he doesn't give a fuck about the tournament because he just beat Daigo. THIS is why EG is mad at him.

Leave all your hype, shit-talking, immaturity what have you on the field. You don't bring that to the media (stream). Just proves your a desperate attention seeking kid.

"If you don't put anyone as a 'celebrity' or on a pedestal none of this drama would come about." Yeah, you defiantly didn't do that to Daigo. Not at all.

Keep staying Obese there Marn.

October 18, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterNope

^ LOL. Too funny.

October 18, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterEG|GenoZ

I like how the first thing you mention is him being fat, grow up a little bruh. Stick to comment trolling, you're top tier.

Marn is a cool dude, and surprisingly sincere in person.

October 18, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterlordofultima

yo marn, keep dancing like you've never seen an endzone before. you'll never be on top if you're that happy with table scraps.

that goes for pretty much every u.s. player.

p.s. while you were celebrating you just let team Int come in and take your tournament with an adon and a ken

October 18, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterkiitoksen

Thanks, I will.

If he didn't get butthurt when people make fun of his weight, people wouldn't ride him so hard. Too bad he's too stupid and obese to understand how bullying works.

Oh but just ignore my valid points, just focus on how I called him fat. HURP DURP

October 18, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterNope

If your first point is how someone is obese, you render your argument invalid. What the hell does that have to do with anything? You have to graduate from high school eventually.

October 18, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterlordofultima

all these haters make the fg community looks real bad.

marn is not the most charismatic person out there for sure, but what makes you say "he only does that because of sponsorship" shit?

you're just making things up without any proof.

i don't like marn nor i hate him, but looking at all these hateful comments really suck

you don't want to be around negative people as they say, and to me the fg community has a lot of hateful people

October 18, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterpapasi

Troll harder bro.

October 18, 2010 | Registered CommenterSpiron

just give up already. beating daigo is like banging katy perry. why wouldn't you be incredibly cocky after that? obviously, you can end up saying regrettable things but thats the adrenaline talking. somehow in your reality, overweight people (that sometimes lose themselves in the moment) should be ridiculed. like lord of ultima said, grow up. keep trolling this shit btw, we all know you'd shut up in real life if someone would call you out for the garbage you just spewed, you insecure prick.

October 18, 2010 | Unregistered Commenter@nope

props to marn. good shit.

October 18, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterbtw

There is merit in talking a big game, there is merit in bringing hype before a match, but when it is said and done the players should respect each other and call it a good match. You watch a UFC match and do you see the winner jumping up and down like an coked out Jack Russel Terrier? No, they celebrate politely and respect their opponent.

Marn has no reason to comment on anything in terms of ethics or class. Marn has not paid out money matches, helped kill the Guilty Gear scene and has acted like a complete ass on a number of occasions. How bitter sweet was it that he right away lost to a player that he tried to start stuff with during some European tournament? Marn always does this, he makes a scene, and not a fun scene.

Does that mean he is not entitled to celebrate? Of course not, he is entitled to celebrate as much as he wants, but what hurts relationships with international players is when he starts going hog wild over how he beat Daigo and he doesn't care about the tourney. That's shitty, and that does not encourage international players to return. Nor does chanting "USA USA" like a bunch of Tea Party ass-hats when an American wins.

Also how dare Marn even comment on this after his nasty comments about losing in his bracket
"I lose to scrubs"
OH yea, Marn supports the scene alright. He supports the diva mentality most of these high end guys have. The Diva's that get sponsored to come out.

This is why some people don't go to tourneys. The top players get special treatment, they actually get commentary during their matches instead of a bunch of gay and racist jokes. Henry Cen offended on so many occasion's during his shift on Saturday, it was disgusting. He should never be allowed to touch the mic EVER again. The Evo stream showed how good commentary can be, and Season's Beatings took 10 steps back.

I give credit for Team Spooky running the stream and they did a good job considering the mob of people and amount of games, but a standard needs to be set for commentating and Marn needs to keep his mouth shut he is a disrespectful little gremlin and not a good individual at all.

October 18, 2010 | Unregistered Commenteranti

I also have to laugh at how Marn believes 2chan represents the mentality of the Japanese community

October 18, 2010 | Unregistered Commenteranti

You aren't important. Stop thinking you are important. People like you who think they know everything is what is truly ruining the FGC. Trolling it up, stream monstering and not knowing the real story.

Fuck the haters.

Hype will never die in the FGC on and off stream.

You don't like it? Too bad. This is what it is and this is what it'll continue to be. Although it'll get cleaned up.

October 18, 2010 | Unregistered Commenter@nope

You'd be surprised how much power 2ch holds. It holds a lot in the Japanese community since it ranges from general to niche topics covering everything. That's just the icing on the cake. Companies (both major and minor) frequent the site as well. Sometimes even putting full on press releases.

October 18, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterNanaya

man, I dont even compete or go to tourneys cause I'm just a casual fighting game player, but fuck, whats with casual players trolling the tournament community? Its pathetic. I play online and offline not caring much for competition and I get myself involved in any drama. If I ever watch a live tourney stream like Keystone's its just entertainment.

October 18, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterHeyo!

edit: I dont get myself involved with "drama".

October 18, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterHeyo!

It's not about importance. It's about people being respectful individuals, and most players are, and some are not. I stopped going to tourneys because grad school eats my time and money, and because the way some top players act.

Last major tourney I attended was the midwest regional 2009. After watching certain players get special treatment, showing up 10 minutes late to matches because they went to eat all because they knew people I said forget it, why play in a tourney when not everyone is going to get treated equally?

And I have to support Marn on one aspect. The "Stream Monsters" are just unpleasant. The chat function is just a cesspool of dipshitery.

October 18, 2010 | Unregistered Commenteranti

Hey Marn, where's your apology for ruining GGXX at Season's Beatings (by rigging the brackets so you wouldn't have to fight Anji as well as betting on Marvel money matches when you should have been running the tournament) as well as Evo (by not showing up to the grand finals)?

Also guys, there's a distinct difference between 2chan and 2ch; the former is a relatively niche imageboard, whereas the latter is the single largest BBS on the entire internet.

October 18, 2010 | Registered Commenterquash

You can't bad mouth marn here even though what you said was the truth. There's too many dickriders on this site. You need to go to eventhubs for that.

October 18, 2010 | Registered CommenterLord Bison

Hate when people use excuses for the things they say, and expect it to be all better. "Oh I was mad so it's okay that I said it", or "I was not feeling good that's why I was an ass to you". Blah blah pathetic.

October 18, 2010 | Registered CommenterKloakenstein

You're all just a bunch of hypocrites. You keep booing Marn but when he fights a foreigner you'll suddenly cheer for him.
God forbid that he calls Mike Ross "free" or Alex Valle a bitch. You'll raise a major shitstorm but against Daigo he just helps the community by adding hype and drama... morons.

October 18, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterASDF

October 18, 2010 | Registered CommenterBlz One

Anti, what do you mean Marn killed the Guilty Gear scene????

October 18, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAriesWarlock

Honestly i don't see what the problem is Diago is a great fighter but every one looked down on Marn even though he trained his but off to use a character not many even look at now in street fighter 4. Marn did an awesome job working with him and it was an incredible match that he won legit an every thing. So he got on the stream right after words and called Diago free so what you don't get a adrenaline rush better than winning a match angst the best knocking him out of the competition when no one thought you had a shot in hell of winning.

Shot at least he is apologizing I know tons of players who wouldn't. Its a tournament a big tournament shot he yelled at another player then hugged him after the fight was over. Became friends with Choco momichi and more than half of Japan and more importantly still good friends with them. I'm sure Digao himself doesn't even care he won't be the king forever so grow up every time some one loses it gives them motivation to get better and more humiliating it is better the motivation. If Marn doesn't get better he might not beat the Beast next time same can be said for Diago.

With all that said welcome to the hype welcome to fighting if you can't get over what was said during a fight then you won't make to many friends. Marns a good guy alittel hype crazy yea but still a good sportsman i look foward to seeing him at more tourneys

October 18, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMAXOUT

Nope is probably right about why Marn apologized, but who gives a shit. The fact that this already has almost 40 comments alone shows what Marn and players like him add to the community. He's an amazing player with gdlk execution that brings the hype both in and out of his matches. Even if he's the guy you love to hate, you're still commenting and still paying attention... He gets the community talking, arguing etc, so I say good shit. If every player was quiet and humble it would be a boring ass community- I think the mix of all different kinds of players is good. SF needs it's Marns and Mike Ross' just like Boxing needs it's Mayweathers and Pacquiaos.

On a personal note- I feel like all the dudes that have a boner for everyone being humble must not have ever been part of an arcade scene... trash talk and rivalries are part of the fun- when did everyone start taking the shit so seriously?? I guess now that players are sponsored and stuff you could make an argument for that..but I just don't think it's that big of a deal outside of sponsor money.

October 18, 2010 | Registered CommenterMEH

once a dick, always a dick. marn is such an asshole in real life, the dude is so full of himself its hard to even look at him in the eye because of his contemptuous attitude.

October 18, 2010 | Unregistered Commentermoo

i dont think he is apoligizing he just said he is apoligetic but he isnt saying sorry he is explaining his hype and if u never been to a tournament then you wont monsters and trolls are just hating its funny how every tournament player understands but trolls and stream monsters are mad....damn you guys are just proving marn right

October 18, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJamRock

Damn, I know Marn apologized and all, but he does have a point. I'm loving the hype from this community! To be honest, I respect both Marn and Daigo as competitors, and they gave it their all last night.

October 18, 2010 | Registered CommenterKazama Hadou

Who cares if Marn calls Diago a scrub? You think he is mad? and like what, stop playing? Diago knows he is one of the best there is, and some American beating him isn't going to change that.

So why are you people getting mad at Marn? He didn't call you a name, or insult you? Are you afraid he hurt Diago's feelings?

Just thought I'd say, calling marn fat and attacking him personally is a fallacy called ad hominem and debunks your entire argument, despite the validity or what was said.

P.S. Marn is trying to lose weight so...

October 18, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMrMayor

First Daigo doesn't kill the scene at all, some would argue that Daigo has helped the scene the more than anyone , and to say that at the end of the blog kind of detracts from the apology. It is possible to say things in the moment and we have all done it before, but deliberately talking trash is a whole other thing, and I feel that it was unnecessary, but it shouldn't be that big of a deal, lets just remember to keep it peaceful.

To the people saying he hurts the community I agree and don't agree. I don't agree because I feel that the community is bigger than one person, I do agree because I feel that we should be courteous to one another and have the dignity to not be sore winners (yes there is such a thing) when we claim victory, so we can save the street fights for Ryu, and maintain a peaceful competitive environment . And speaking of Dignity it's kind of ironic that he's talking trash using Dudley who we all know would disapprove LoL.

October 18, 2010 | Registered CommenterRebel123

Does anyone here think Daigo cares about a little shit talking? Seriously... everybody in the world wants to take him down, and he is far from being undefeated. If his skin was thin he would have quit years ago.

Marn won this time. Give it to him.. He got in Daigo's head, frustrated him, and punished him with a wake-up ultra. Who cares if he's ran his mouth a little. They shook hands and showed respect. The tournament scene is bigger than Marn, and it will survive his shenanigans.

October 18, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterDudeabides

October 18, 2010 | Registered Commenterhaunts

I love the people just eating up and then talk how epic their "trolls" are.. Thanks, continue to poisoning the community the way you do. I'm sure glad we have so many people "on the inside" of knowing why people do stuff. Honestly it's a whole lot of people who do nothing and when they see someone who perhaps invested the time and effort into something they love, they get labeled a loser. Argue the point that those who "hate" are retarded and break down logic, you get called a dick rider. Stop being fucking children.

October 18, 2010 | Registered CommenterMabans

@anti you haven't watched much ufc if you think there isn't bad blood between some of the fighters. just like any sport, this is a competitive scene, so you gotta live with the trash talking at times. capcom didn't put in the taunt feature by accident. anyway, daigo's a robot with limited english and enough accomplishments that he could probably care less about marn's truffle shuffle. daigo has had his bad days, and was due for having one at a us tournament.

October 18, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAboveOmniscience

Daigo killing the scene? lolwut. A lot of people I know still talk about that 3S match where he parried Chun-Li's super and came back. And some of those people don't care that much about fighting games. If anything, he's one of the few players the people know because of what he does and not because he runs his mouth.

October 18, 2010 | Registered CommenterAirMaster

How can you call someone fat and immature? Calling people fat is immature man. I'm not a big fan of Marn and all the things he does but he was entertaining and earned that moment of glory and hype. I believe him and Andre acting like the tournament didn't matter after beating Daigo was just a sign of confidence issues though, it mattered to them.

October 19, 2010 | Registered CommenterKyledekyle

Yeah, beating Daigo means shit. I'm not impressed at people beating Daigo. Fool is a scrub anyways. Those fools do have confidence issues for beating the shittiest Ryu in the world. Best Ryu is RS3. Get out of your cave man.
