« SUPER STREET FIGHTER 4 CHARACTER SELECT PORTRAITS »
The official CAPCOM Super Street Fighter 4 NAKKY blog was updated today, and while nothing really all that new was announced, it appears we will be seeing some real updates next week. Jigsaw from SRK translated the entry and at the end it reads:
And right now, as I'm writing this, the team is working diligently on the rest of the portraits!! For those guys and girls you don't know about yet, too... He he he. They will be announced successively, so stay tuned!!
OK everyone, maybe you'll get to see something next week too?!
Absolutely!!!
So hopefully some new characters will be confirmed, or something just as interesting. My bet is on the gameplay system, but either way we will learn a lot more about the game next week with the new blog update and CAPCOM Fight Club taking place on the 22nd in NYC.
All that aside, the majority of this entry is about the new character select screen art and how they use in game models to help with the process of finding a pose for each character. Personally, I'm more of a fan of the artwork we saw last week -- Juri looks a bit demented but perhaps that's what the artists were aiming for?
Thanks to Jigsaw from SRK for the translation.
Character Select unveiling
Hello everyone!
It's really starting to getting cold these days, huh... Halloween is coming up, so I'm looking forward to some pumpkin-based food and sweets. I could really go for some fried oyster!
Anyway, regarding the new characters in SSF4, we've already announced the trio of Dee Jay, Hawk and Juri, but there'll be more! Ono said something like "we want to include 8 characters", in interviews, after all. B-but, can we pull that off?
Speaking of adding characters, the team of designers are currently hard at work drawing new Character Select illustrations! So today, hot off the presses, is Dee Jay's Character Select portrait!
The Character Select illustrations aren't drawn by hand completely from scratch, they're in fact retouched screenshots of the actual game models.
The first step is to find poses that would fit the Character Select screen, and take lots and lots of shots!
Candidate shots like these ones are then handed in to the chief designer. The chief designer then goes through the pictures until he has a revelation, like "This one! This is it!", and then he goes to work on painting over the chosen picture.
This is the picture that was chosen with a little divine help. And in the end, it evolved into these two pictures! Wait, two?
Oh, they're different! They look almost the same, but they really are different!!
So... what's going on? For some reason, there are now two illustrations of Dee Jay. (Actually, the reason is that the final picture hasn't been decided on yet.) Which one do you guys prefer??
So using this process, Character Select illustrations are created for all the characters. And while I'm at it, I thought I'd show the illustrations for T. Hawk and Juri. Here they are!
Cool, huh?
T. Hawk looking like he's trying to keep a lid on that kind and powerful determination of his...
Juri's coldhearted eyes and sly smile...
And right now, as I'm writing this, the team is working diligently on the rest of the portraits!! For those guys and girls you don't know about yet, too... He he he. They will be announced successively, so stay tuned!!
OK everyone, maybe you'll get to see something next week too?!
Absolutely!!!

Patience is a virtue!
(bonus points if you get the Virtua Fighter reference..)
No eyebrows on DeeJay. Why do guys in the street fighter universe insist on waxing their brows?
@Haunts
Random, not related to article, but damn that's a freaking sexy looking Avatar, lol.
Haunts what sort of game play changes do think will be implemented?
That is absolutely amazing that they are using the actual character models to get those portraits. I hate to say this... but T-Hawk looks facking awesome. I wonder what the alternate costumes on T-Hawk and Dee Jay will be like!
I wish they would change Dee Jay's image. It looks like Ryu's b/c of the hand motion. Arrgh!
@thedungeon,
I am not sure really.. I thought they were making changes to the Focus system but Ono said they are keeping it the same..
Ono is also a huge liar so who knows... :P
The giant man hands are back to haunt me -.-
Ooooh, boy. Looks like Juri is going to be my new sub.
@Robbes,
It's perspective. Her hand is closer to you than the rest of her. Thus, it's bigger.
Deejay's smile is better than Bison's. Discuss.
