« GAMESPOT SF4 & HD REMIX TOURNAMENT IN SAN FRANCISCO »

HD REMIX STATIONSSo yesterday at the CBS Interactive Center in San Francisco, Gamespot along side Capcom hosted a tournament for Street Fighter 4 and SF2 HD Remix. I wasn't too sure if I was going to check it out or not but I'm glad I did. No entry fee and a chance to win $2500, so might as well right?

I registered at the last minute through email and was listed as an alternate for the tournament so I wasn't even sure if I would be able to play. They told us to show up and sign in between 3-3:30. I ended up getting there around 3:25 (!), got my badge and was listed as an alternate for the tournament.

They had free Quiznos sandwiches and drinks before walking into the main area where they had 4 Viewlix SF4 Arcade set ups and about 4-5 set ups with SF2 HD Remix on Xbox 360 hooked up to some 24" HD TV's. There were cameramen, Gamespot employees interviewing players all over the place and of course a couple cosplayers (Blanka, female Rolento and Hayato).

A handful of people didn't show up so I ended up being listed as a competitor for both games. After I was put into the brackets, I was interviewed on who I am, where I'm from and my history with Street Fighter (this was mandatory!).  The tournament was underway shortly thereafter.

SF4 STATIONS

I wasn't aware we had to play both games so the HD Remix was a bit of a surprise. I played Sagat in both games, won one match in SF4 and none in HD remix. I played a Sagat mirror in my match in HD Remix. It was close but ended up throwing it away both rounds unfortunately. In SF4 my first match was against a Dhalsim and my second match was against my friend Steve (Zangief player) who I play all the time at the arcade! Bummer! He made it to top 4 though and lost to the guy who won the tournament so I didn't feel that bad for getting scraped.

After I won my first match in SF4 they had me go over to "The Winner's Circle" ("I don't have time for losers!") where they had another station set up to interview people who won their matches. We'll see if my interview was embarrassing as I remember it being when it ends up online!

I didn't see the finals for HD remix but some of the later matches in SF4 were really intense. In both tournaments it was 1 match, single elimination so it made the finals really exciting. It ended up being Renzo (Rufus) vs John Choi (Sagat). It was a real close match but ultimately Renzo ended up taking by spamming dive kicks and EX Messiah Kicks with Rufus. John Choi played really solid through most of the tournament, pulling off some nice combos and playing fearlessly through out the whole thing as always.

The top 4 for Street Fighter IV looked something like this:

  1. Renzo (Rufus)
  2. John Choi (Sagat)
  3. Graham Wolfe (Zangief)
  4. Steve Kosack (Zangief)

After the tournament was over, they opened up the stations for some casual matches. I was able to play some solid Abel and Bison players that I haven't played before and over all ended up learning a lot of new strategies.

CHUN-LI DOLL

The email said they would keep going until about 8pm but people started to shuffle out about 30 min after the tournament was over. We ended up leaving around 6ish and on the way out grabbed a limited edition Chun-Li doll that I'll probably end up selling on Ebay or something 15 years down the line for hundreds of dollars.

I ended up taking some videos of some casual matches after the tournament  so check it out!

Be sure to keep an eye on Gamespot.com for the feature they will run on this event as well.
